Whats new in the
art room
This year Ms. Glover is working on incorporating VTS into the Art room.. What is VTS you ask? VTS stands for Visual Thinking Strategies. In using Visual Thinking Strategies I pull out a piece of artwork for the students to discuss. I start by asking the kids an obvious question. What do you see? They then tell me what they see. We do this for roughly 5-10 minutes. The descriptors that the kids see start to lead the kids to a story behind the image and from here we get in to bigger questions. What do you think is going in this picture? What type of art do you think this is? Is this an old picture? They have to back up their answers. What makes you think that? It is lots of fun. There is not necessarily a right or wrong answer and frequently what is going on in a childs personal life at that time will be obvious by what they see in the picture. " It's a family." So far at Euper Lane I have done this with the Kindergartners and they very much enjoyed it.
The experience encourages individuals to "talk" about art. Frequently when we go in to museums we don't know what say or how to say it. This process teaches kids to find their voices. It is my plan to use VTS in the classroom multiple times throughout this schools year in every grade level.

The Spread The Kindness Project is a scheduled donation program to improve our community Human Society. We are working to pair three schools together to run a donation drive for a three week period at a time. At the end of that three weeks another pairing of schools begins their drive. The process rotates throughout our school system and school year calendar to ensure a proper amount of food and supplies end up at our local Humane Society throughout the year.
Why is this a great solution? The humane society is a nonprofit program to help animals on the street. This will give them a great way to get the supplies they need all year round. Like dog food, beds, toys, and a lot more. Usually the Humane Society gets an annual drive at a hand full of schools at best. This system will hopefully get more schools involved, providing more drives, and ending up with more supplies.
